Blue Hole

The Blue Hole is located along the Orote cliffline just a few minutes outside the harbor to the left as you are leaving the harbor's entrance. At times there is a mooring buoy on the surface marking the dive site's location. Also you can look at the top of the cliffline and see a triangular antenna just above the point for reference. Descending down the line or just free descending you will land on a barren rock surface at about 50 feet (15 meters). There is however a large set of rocks just to the North of the hole. The hole is in a "Heart" shape. It's even more dramatic when looking from inside the hole at depths of 25 to 38 meters. You can easily swim out of a huge opening in the hole's tunnel at about 35 to 38 meters depending upon tide. On the walls of the hole there are pink sea whips that dangle back and forth with the surge. Watch where you put your hands as there are also moray eels that like snacks (fingers). Deep inside the hole you will find a short cave towards the North at a depth of 37 meters. It's neat to look at the top of the hole (heart design) while you are sitting on a rock just outside the cave. After you are done with the hole head North or South to explore the many big underwater rock formations. There is one about 10 minutes North of the hole that you can swim under that has billions of small fish and sometimes a sleeping whitetip shark. Also nearby is a huge red snapper and a big eye puffer fish. To the South there is an anemone at about 24 meters deep and at the last rock down there is a neat overhang with some neat fish hanging out.

With the Blue Hole getting ever more popular it is harder to dive there. On some days there are as many as 7 boats all waiting to drop their divers. It's no fun diving the Blue Hole with more than 100 divers down. Photography is horrible with all the divers bubbles and silt kicked up and kicked into the hole.
