Pinnacle

"Pinnacle", the supreme dive point that only a few have experienced! So what's so great about this point? Well, for a starter, it's one of the only places on Guam where you'll find a vortex of large schooling fish. There are times when large jacks converge on the drop-off and swim in a tornado style motion. If you're lucky, you can swim into this maze of fish and they'll open enough to let you into the middle. It's really something to have fish everywhere. You can just about reach out and touch one. But this all happens at depths of around 100 feet or more. Pinnacle is located in the North quarter of Guam just outside Double Reef (NCTAMS). From the Pinnacle you can clearly see the two white electronic domes on the cliffline and Haputo beach. It is not a dive for the beginner or weak. For one thing there is no decent line. With strong currents present most of the time you must make a rapid decent "head first" straight down to at least 80 feet. Lagging behind and the current can sweep you past the reef. A couple of years ago there was a mooring line but it's usually cut by local fisherman and spearfisherman who don't like fun divers in the area. The mooring line is still there as of last month laying not far from a huge rock at 110 feet. Looking down at the bottom there is a reef that goes from 80 down to 150 and then drops off an underwater cliff. Actually it looks just like the "Orote Point Crevice". In fact the point to swim to is the Pinnacle crevice. If you can find the old mooring swim about 210 degrees on your compass. This crevice snakes back and forth for about 200 yds. Before approaching the crevice you can look down at the reef and see huge sharks, tuna, wahoo and barracuda. If there is nothing to be seen just cruise the top of the crevice at about 80 feet and sooner or later you run into a school of 30 to 50 very large barracuda. There are also tons of smaller barracuda. Blue, blue water no matter which way you look. Even with no fish to see this is an exciting blue water open ocean dive. This dive is usually run at a 30 minute limit. I give my divers 5 to 8 minutes at 100 feet plus, then 15 to 20 minutes at 50 feet, and lastly a solid 5 minute safety/decomp stop at 15 feet. "COMPUTERS ONLY for everyone". With the remaining air left in everyones tank I usually have the boat take us over to Double Reef to burn up the rest of the air in very shallow water. The dive is an absolute blast and I'm lucky to have made about 40 dives there in the last 3 years.

Got a lot of dives under your belt? Well this one is for you. Not really that difficult if you like strong currents and huge fish just like you see in Palau and the outer islands. It's purely a drift dive in every sense of the word and you must have a safety sausage. Yes, I've dove it from my boat when they had a mooring line there but I always worried about getting back to the boat. We all take chances but make sure you can afford the chance. Life is but a choice!
